Summer at RPL!

WOWZA! So much happening this summer at Rochester Public Library! Are you ready?

Here’s what’s coming up in June–
June, the first month in our STEAM-y Summer, is all about chemistry! In the kids’ room, you’ll find information and projects based on this fascinating science about mixing and changes! Messier experiments will happen at Stories in the Park. 🙂

June 12 will be our first Family Storytime, a family being, of course, adult(s) and kid(s) who spend time together and take care of each other and like or love each other. We’ll read, sing, and play! Every Thursday, all ages, 3:30.

Also on June 12, The Dumbledorks return! RPL’s abracadabra-mazing Harry Potter reading and magical fun group is meeting once again, on Thursdays at 4:30. We’ll read book excerpts and do some super-wizardy projects! Movies will be screened each week at 5:30, for all who are interested. The group is for anyone under 13 who has read and/or loves Harry Potter; movies are open for everyone. Meeting on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.

On Friday, June 13, Stories in the Park is back! Meeting at the bandstand on the park during Rochester’s fabulous Farmers’ Market, this is, no exaggeration, the most fun you can have in an hour! I would not lie about this. Come for stories, experiments, art, and exploration! Every Friday in summer except 7/4 and 8/1, 3:30-4:30.

Friday, June 13, will also be our first all-ages stargazing night! Bring your telescopes and binoculars, and I’ll bring mine. We’ll set up in a nice dark spot and see what we can see! Location TBD (if you have a dark field, hit me up!). We’ll meet on the 2nd Friday night in summer, as long as we have clear skies. 9 pm.

Be sure to stop in after June 9 to check out the fabulously reorganized Kids’ Room! Many thanks to all the patient folks who have endured the mess I created as I worked on this project!

On Tuesday, June 17, Rochester Library is pleased to welcome Rochestarians Rob and Char Gardner for a screening of The Courage to Care, their 1985 documentary about the Holocaust. With commentary by Elie Wiesel, the Gardners profile Jews rescued during WW2 as well as those who rescued them. Nominated for an Academy Award for best short documentary and aired nationally on PBS. 7 pm screening; film is 30 minutes, followed by a discussion with Rob and Char about the moral and ethical dilemmas rescuers confronted.

And back once again, Adult Summer Reading with Prizes! Starting June 24, stop in to get your bingo card, filled with new library and reading challenges–nothing too hard, I promise! Only fun stuff! Each time you cross off a square on your bingo card, you get an entry in the raffle for a sweet prize. Raffle will be on August 16.

Regular programming is ongoing with Purls of Wisdom, our knitting and handcrafts group, continuing the meet each Tuesday at 1:30. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, join the fabulous Amy B for our Writers’ Workshop at 1 pm.

And don’t forget about borrowing passes to parks, historical sites, and museums! Or cool outdoor gear from our Library of Things!

Stay tuned for more awesomeness to come–new events are still being added!
