Did you know that April is Citizen Science Month? No kidding! Join Rochester Public Library and SciStarter to help do 2.50 MILLION acts of science in April to celebrate America’s 250th birthday! SciStarter is an organization that believes that every single one of us can contribute to our scientific knowledge–and they show you how. Science doesn’t have to happen in a lab or be complicated. SciStarter offers programs like keeping track of migrating birds or butterflies, or photographing plants in your area (back yard, even), or taking note of when local plants begin to bloom. Our goal here in Rochester is to do 250 acts of science to add to the national total. Come to the library to learn more and take part!
RPL will be offering science programs and projects throughout the month in celebration of Citizen Science Month, Earth Day, and Spring! Kids will have the chance to try their hands at creating bird, insect, or other kinds of animal nests. Kite building will also be happening. We will have a couple of all-ages programs to make seed paper and also to create a piece of art from recycled materials. Do you have a bucketful of old bottles, papers, and/or cardboard that you don’t want to toss? Bring your clean, intact recyclables here! Stay tuned for all the details on these awesome programs!
On April 25, we hope you will join us for an excellent informational program about Vermont Forest Cemetery, given by Jim Hogle, Communication and Outreach Coordinator. Jim will present a documentary about the VFC, add some more information afterwards, and answer any questions. This is a great chance to learn more about a legacy to the whole earth. 10 am, upstairs.
Don’t forget to save the date for the Friends of the Library 2nd Annual Spring Fling! Vermont’s Poet Laureate, Bianca Stone, will join us for a reading from her newest collection, there will be live art with Caro Tavelli-Abar, soup inspired by Major Jackson’s new poetry, AND Jack Rowell and Sara Tucker talking about Jack’s new book of photography. WOW! It’s happening on Saturday, May 16, from 4 – 6 PM here at the library.
On April 7, and each first Tuesday of the month, please join us at RPL for a masked story time. We’ll meet in the children’s rooms for some sweet stories and then enjoy the many wonderful things that can be found there! We’ll explore art, movement, science, and building, balancing free play with guided activity. Our group will be meeting before the official opening time of the library; everyone in the library during this hour will be masked. Additionally, the library’s air purifier will be running. N95 masks are available if needed (adult size only). Please make sure masks are covering both the nose and mouth, and please stay home if you are sick or have recently spent time around someone else who is sick. All ages are welcome! Masks are required for anyone over the age of 2. 10-11 AM
Regular programming continues with Purls of Wisdom Handcrafting on Tuesdays at 1:30. On Thursdays, join us for The Preschoolers’ Rumpus at 3. The Writers’ Workshop with Amy Braun is happening again on April 18 at 1:00.
