April is Citizen Science Month! RPL will be offering science programs and projects throughout the month in celebration of Citizen Science Month, Earth Day, and Spring. There will be nest-building and kite creation, as well as a couple of all-ages programs: create your own recycled art on the 18th and make seed paper at the end of the month (date TBA). This week in the kids’ room, make a kite!
On April 18, we hope you’ll come do some art with Natalie! For Earth Day, Natalie will lead your inner artist in creating some unique & environmentally-minded art using recyclable materials. If you’ve got any clean recycling, bring it along. Keep stuff out of the landfill! Relax! Save the planet! That’s what I call win-win-win! 10 AM; all ages; kids under 12 welcome with an adult helper.
Snow has melted, temperatures have risen and that means…Astronomy Season is back! Join local astronomy enthusiast Sam Newmarco and his giant fancy telescope for a look at galaxies, nebulae, planets, and anything else glowing up in the sky. Use our gear or bring your own (telescopes and binoculars work). We’ll meet in the field at Liberty Hill Farm at 8 PM on Saturday, April 18; email for directions. Many thanks to the good folks at LH Farm for allowing us the use of their field! Any change of date due to weather will be posted on Front Porch Forum and the library’s Facebook page.
RACI (Rochester Area Climate Initiative) will have some helpful information about lessening our detrimental impacts on the world around us–this, in celebration of Earth Day. Look for this mid-month.
On Thursday, April 23, join Maya in making some seed paper! We’ll make our own paper, add some seeds to it. When it’s dry and the weather is warm, you can plant it! It will grow! Very cool. 4 PM, all ages.
On April 25, we hope you will join us for an excellent informational program about Vermont Forest Cemetery, given by Jim Hogle, Communication and Outreach Coordinator. Jim will present a documentary about the VFC, add some more information afterwards, and answer any questions. This is a great chance to learn more about a legacy to the whole earth. 10 am, upstairs.
Regular programming continues with Purls of Wisdom Handcrafting on Tuesdays at 1:30. On Thursdays, join us for The Preschoolers’ Rumpus at 3. The Writers’ Workshop with Amy Braun is happening again on April 18 at 1:00.
If you are getting into some dirt, don’t forget that RPL has an extensive collection of gardening tools available to borrow (for free, of course!). You can look at our online catalog to see what’s available. We have many wonderful books about all kinds of gardens, and their possible issues, as well. Making a garden? First stop is the library!
Don’t forget to save the date for the Friends of the Library 2nd Annual Spring Fling Fundraiser for RPL! Vermont’s Poet Laureate, Bianca Stone, will join us for a reading from her newest collection, there will be live art with Caro Tavelli-Abar, soup inspired by Major Jackson’s new poetry, AND Jack Rowell and Sara Tucker talking about Jack’s new book of photography. WOW! It’s happening on Saturday, May 16, from 4 – 6 PM here at the library.
