New weekly winter programs for kids start this week! On Thursdays, Wee Wigglers Baby and Toddler Playtime (birth – 2 yrs) will be meeting at 10:30. Bring your little one for a gentle, very-young-child-centered time to explore movement, eye contact, and safe climbing. Plenty of board books will be on hand to enjoy pictures, the feel of a book, and simple words. Come let your baby roam in a peaceful environment, and connect with other area families. Each child will receive their very own board book to keep! If your child is not yet crawling, you may want to bring a blanket to put on the (pretty clean) floor.
The Preschoolers’ Library Rumpus starts on the 15th as well. Designed for active 3 – 5 year-olds, the library’s second floor will be filled with gear and fun stuff to allow your child to move, create, and be active! If we can wear them out, I’ll read a few books at the end of the hour. This is happening at 3 on Thursdays.
To round out Thursdays at the library, kids 7 and older can drop in for board games. We’ve got a huge selection here, and you are welcome to bring your favorite from home. We’ll get going with the games right around 4 PM; 1/15 will be the first one. See you then! Oh, and–free snacks!
On January 17, Barbara and her sweet fluffy dog, Wallace, will make their debut at Dogs Love Stories! You can snuggle and pet Wallace, read a book to him, or listen to someone else read. Our other new pup, the sweet Stella, along with her person, Sandy, will be here on the 24th. Lots of chances to get some doggie-time and do some reading! Programs start at 10 AM.
January 24 sees the return of our annual Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge! Gather a team and be here at 9 AM (don’t forget your coffee). Each team will have a copy of the same 500-piece puzzle. First team to finish (or gets closest to it by the time the library closes!) WINS! All yours will be the bragging rights for being the fastest puzzlers in town! There are enough puzzles for 6 teams. Teams can have any number of people, of any age, but you will all need to fit around a table!
Join us any or every week for our regular programming, as we continue to knit, spellcast, and/or write our way through winter.
- Purls of Wisdom with The Amazing Hilde, RPL’s hugely fun handcrafting group, meets Tuesdays at 1:30.
- Wizards and Ogres alike are invited to join Rochester’s largest game of Magic: The Gathering, every Tuesday, 4 – 7 PM. We’ll provide decks and cards if you need them, expert guidance in learning to play, and free snacks!
- Amy Braun will work with you and other area writers to hone your authorly skills at her monthly Writers’ Workshop, meeting on the third Saturday of each month at 1 PM. That’s 1/17 this month.
Coming up in February, we’ll have an author talk with the magical and very-knowlegeable Jane English of Calais. My family has a long association with Jane, stretching back to my children’s days at EarthWalk, where Jane was an elder, guiding children in outdoor adventures, skills, stories, and song. She has now published a book, White Pines: A Woman’s Lifelong Friendship with These Trees. Jane’s book is filled with her breath-taking photography of, and many stories and much information about, these beautiful trees. You can check out our copy of the book now! Jane will be here on Saturday, February 7. Mark your calendars!
Don’t forget that spring will be here eventually, and, even before that, RPL’s Annual Seed Giveaway! You can come to the library on February 21 to get some packets of veggie, herb, or flower seeds–for free! More details to come.
Thank you so much for your support!
